What Fort Morgan does to a window
The Fort Morgan peninsula is a narrow spit of sand with the Gulf on one side of Fort Morgan Road and Mobile Bay and Bon Secour Bay on the other, and nothing much in between except the dunes and the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. The beach houses at Surfside Shores, Morgantown and along the Gulf side of the road face straight into the sea breeze, and the big walls of glass that make them worth renting are coated in salt within a couple of weeks. With no trees or buildings to slow the wind, the salt reaches the bay-side houses and the Navy Cove shoreline too, just a little more slowly.
The sand is the other thing. The quartz sand on the peninsula is fine enough to ride the wind, and it settles into tracks, sills and screens on every house out here. Mix it with summer humidity and the afternoon storms and it turns to a grit that scratches if it is wiped dry. The golf-course homes at Kiva Dunes and the Beach Club area deal with well-water irrigation that leaves hard mineral spots along the lower panes, and the shaded glass under the pines and oaks in the older lots near the fort grows mildew in the shoulder seasons. Hurricane season brings sand drifts and spray that no one wants to look through for the rest of the year.
A monthly or every-other-month plan suits most Gulf-front houses on the peninsula, because the salt comes back too fast for quarterly, and bay-side and golf-course homes do well on a quarterly plan. Most owners have the inside glass done once a year, timed for the slow season.
